Blind Folded

We walked together along the path from the Hip building on Hönggerberg. My eyes were covered, and I couldn’t see any visual aspects. However, the initial pure blackness gradually changed over time as sound, smell, and touch created an image that reminded me of places I had previously visited, which then appeared visually like two-dimensional images before my eyes. At first, this was something I had to get used to, but it was extremely instructive, as it allowed me to perceive the space in its architectural quality beyond mere visuality, in a way I had never experienced before. I also noticed not only a spatial shift in perception but also a temporal one—time seemed to pass more slowly, and distances that I remembered as shorter stretched out. It was an extremely interesting and eye-opening experience.

Soundscapes

THE GROUND AND THE SKY

Sitting on the angled steps in front of two large chessboards and table tennis courts, we closed our eyes and listened to the sounds of our surroundings. Remarkably, despite being surrounded by buildings, the sound traveled quite far, allowing us to pleasantly hear the hum of the crowds from the restaurant. This hum also softened the noise level of the people playing loudly in front of us, who at times (as seen in the image, imitating chess pieces) adjusted their behavior accordingly. We could also clearly hear the street as cars passed by, but eventually, these sounds blended into the sea of noise coming from the masses seated at the alumni restaurant. Interestingly, amidst the constant hum, the high-pitched rhythm of the table tennis ball bouncing from one side of the table to the other stood out distinctly.

On the rooftop terrace of the HIL building, you could not only hear the constant hum of ventilation noises in the background but, surprisingly, also the footsteps of people down below. A few passing crows were quite loud, while an airplane, with its roaring sound, would have blended into the hum of the ventilation if it hadn’t stood out due to its volume. The sounds of passing cars from the nearby road also joined in. It was remarkable that, from such a height, you could still hear people speaking below.
