Architectural acoustics deals with the design and modification of buildings and enclosed spaces to achieve optimal sound quality. It focuses on enhancing the acoustic properties of rooms, auditoriums, concert halls, theatres, offices, and other architectural spaces to ensure that sound behaves in desirable, functional ways.
In this session, we focus on auditory perception. We look at the anatomy and physiology of our ears, and examine the spectral, temporal, amplitude and spatial dimensions of hearing. We consider why sound pressure level and perceived loudness diverge across the audible range, how interaural time and level differences help us localise sound sources, and how hearing deteriorates with age and exposure. Through listening demonstrations, you will learn to relate acoustic quantities to what an occupant hears.
