Location: HIL Building North Entrance
Idea: This area sits at the entrance into the HIL building, at the border between a courtyard park space an the indoor studios. The foyer-like area is occupied by those who seek a smoke break, a simple respite from studios, or just a way to enter the building. It is not fully part of inside or outside; rather they occupy a middle ground.

Transformation: Acoustic Mirrors

We seek to transform this middle ground from a stark, hollow space with no clear acoustic design—unlike its adjacent indoor or outdoor programs—into one that blends the outdoor natural sounds into the transition space. Using acoustic mirrors that utilize geometry to direct sounds into focalized points, sounds of rustling leaves, an active fountain, or drizzling rain can be transported into the space, disguising the space as a mimic of the outdoors.
2 Soundscapes: One with operating fountain, one without fountain and with rain
With the two different soundscapes, one containing sounds of rain and another containing the noise of an existing fountain, inhabitants of the foyer can experience the two different soothing soundscapes from the comfort of the same place/position. They should leave this area feeling soothed, ready to go back into the studio or leave into nature.
