Assignment 1: Blindfolded Walk
The first part of the Seminar week was a walk trough the campus of ETH Hönggerberg. This place is well-known to most of the architecture students, myself included, as we spent the majority of our time here.
Nonetheless this walk offered something different from the everyday routine on the campus as this was a not a typical walk. To explore the campus blindfolded was an interesting experience as it offered a new perspective to view this good-known atmosphere.
Walking blindfolded messes with one’s perception of time and space. Sounds of busses and people walking by make you feel they are closer as they appear to be. On the other hand in enclosed spaces it is hard to differentiate the exact position of small objects with precision.
This assignment was really helpful in discovering how people are used to the busy and noisy atmosphere of the surroundings and how much they miss out when not paying attention to it.
Assignment 2: Soundscapes
The second assignment of the Seminar week hat built upon the first one. With newly uncovered mindfulness about the surrounding sounds, we embarked on a search for an interesting soundscape.
For this assignment I chose to explore the studios of the architecture students as they are both characterized with a busy and a quiet atmosphere, depending on the semester phase.
What I found was an intimate atmosphere, where most of the voices were muffled. There was a constant buzz, coming from the ventilation shafts, which I have never noticed before. In this peaceful atmosphere the steps on the floor felt incredibly loud and so did the opening of the storage drawers.
This experience showed me that there are many layers even in the most common situations.
Assignment 3: grrawe
For this assignment we had to listen to the composition of Gerriet K. Sharma and represent it via sketches.
This experience reminded me of a sleepless night, that I have tried to represent with this sketch.
Assignment 4: Unity for Beginners
The seminar week incorporates using Unity as a platform for visual and audial representation. With my first tries of using it, I wanted to create a dystopian and post-apocalyptic atmosphere. To achieve this I played around with the sun and the fog settings.
Assignment 4: Anxious and Attentive
Inspiration
Sketch
For this assignment I chose the words anxious and attentive. This is the first space that came to my mind when thinking about this feelings. It is a forest-like scape that is quite dark, with these spherical sources of light and noise.
These are some prompt images to achieve a better visual idea of that feeling.
