Assignement_1: Blindfold Walking

This experiment was conducted on the morning of the 21st of October. The Path walked blindfolded started from the second floor HIB Building passing through the bridge of connection with the HIL building’s ground floor and continuing around Stefano Franscini Platz. It took 5 minutes to really focus only on hearing sense. Passing through open and enclosed spaces it was clear the difference between the two.

Assignement_2: Soundscapes

This recording was made on October 21st at 13:00 on the bridge connecting the HIB and HIL buildings at ETH Hönggerberg Campus. The recording captures the peak moment of the day when the bridge is most heavily used by people going to and coming back from their lunch break.

The main recorded sounds include:

  • People crossing the bridge
  • People in the vicinity
  • Cars exiting the campus’s underground parking
  • Planes flying overhead
  • The construction site for the new Physics building

A qualitative sound analysis has been conducted, assigning a value from 1 to 10 to the various noises heard.

As a result, standing at the center of the bridge, the dominant sounds are those of cars leaving the parking lot and planes overhead, which tend to overlap with the sound of people walking. When really focusing, it is possible to hear birds chirping the distant sounds of the construction site and the low noises produced by people simply walking on the bridge.
